Have you drive manual before? It's very similar.

Correct me if I'm wrong:

D1: Start from a dead stop
D2: Start from a dead stop in snow/rain condition (or comfort driving)
D6: Highway cruising

I find the manual feature useful when driving downhill, to use the engine compression to hold the car back at same speed without needing to apply the brakes.

And as mentioned above when roads are slippery/icey/snowy, using D2 orD3 is great for starting from a dead stop.

If some are in a "Sporty" mood they may use this feature to control shift points the way they want.
