Good reason to have dealer perform Service

Im been a DIYer and backyard mechanic for 40 years, rebuilt and built many cars and trucks and motorcycle for fun projects. I have a garage with a couple rollaways of tools, mig and gas welder and jacks. But as tech improves on the newer cars Ive slowly allowed more and more of the work, service other than mods to go back to the dealer.

To the point of my post. My C250 was due for the first service since I purchased it used as a CPO with about 6000 miles on it. The dealer did the CPO and at that time performed another Service A so my car was set for another 10,000 miles. . I hit that in about 3 months and scheduled my Service B with my dealer .

Took the car in yesterday and as far as I was concerned no complaints or concerns the car was driving and everything was great. The dealer had a special going with some e mailed coupons and a mailer that they sent out for the holidays that brought the cost of the Service B with brake fluid flush down to $ 353 total including a loaner car (2014 C300) and car wash and vac.

I got a call 2 hours after dropping the car off from the SA to inform me that they were doing additional repairs under warranty. The SA saw some peeling of the chrome on the steering wheel center piece (chrome / stainless center of steering wheel) and that was being replaced, the ECM had a free update, the Tech heard a pop sound when the sunroof was closing and they were replacing both rails and track in the sunroof and the battery was being replaced because a cell did not test correctly.

So I guess I could have done the service my self and maybe saved a couple hundred but I would not have received a new battery, ECM update, sunroof repair and steering wheel repair. All of this might well have lasted until the warranty ran out and I would have been out of pocket to repair. I think if you have a good dealer to use for your servive its more than worth it to pay them and get all the additional checks and repairs.
