Rotary dial not working

This is on a 2008 C-class with the basic audio (no GPS).
It does not work when I turn the dial but still works fine when I push it up/down, left/right.
Any ideas / experiences? I tried to reset the system but that did not help.
The sound from the dial is the same, I don't think it is mechanically broken.
Thanks.

Not sure what the cause is, but after we got our car back from a dealer repair (trans replacement) last week, the wife noticed that this wheel isn't working, just like you described. In addition, the gear selector +/- is acting up. She'll be taking the car back in a few weeks to have them fix it, whatever it is.
