Checking engine oil level
Glynn et al, I have had many MBs over the years and currently have a number in the extended family. In the past I have checked the oil level cold in the morning. Last year I bought a new C300 4M. After delivery I checked the oil level cold in the morning before starting and it appeared overfilled. I took it to the dealer and was informed that overnight the oil in the filter housing drains down and they checked it warm about 5 minutes after shutoff and it was at the full mark. OK, but since then I have checked it and indeed at the 5 minute mark it shows at the full mark. At 10 minutes its a bit overfilled, at half an hour its way overfilled. I recently had the oil changed at the dealer and same thing. I also own a 2008 ML320CDI and a 2003 C230 coupe. The family owns a 2003 C320 and a 2002 C230 coupe. I'm now thinking that all of them should be checked 5 minutes after shutoff before oil drains from the filter housing. Am I correct? Thanks for the advice.

This is the same thing that i have found with my 2012 c250. I was advised the same thing from the Dealer. The oil will drain into the pan as it sits and to check it while it is hot. W/In the first minute or so after the car was shut off.
