Does anyone know how difficult/expensive it would be to simply change to the European cupholder (with the sliding cover)? Why we didn't get this in Canada is a mystery: I guess it was a cost saving.

If the console is the same, not very expensive <100.
If it's different, and you're willing to get one off ebay from a wreck, then I'd say 200 plus DIY time.

I was wondering the same thing! I like the euro console look and function much better. Guess its a matter of getting the part number and see if you can order it through a local dealer.
i ended up just buying a replacement... looks good for now.
That trim is the old style (chrome) which the trim would be peeling-off again. The 2013-2014 trim has this part number: 204-680-03-07-7347 or 204-680-48-08-9H44 (not sure why two different part numbers - On the box it ends at 9H44 but on the actual part it ends on 7347) this trim style has the matte silver trim that will match the matte silver trim of the command knob and won't be peeling. This is showing as a $50 part on some MB parts online brand new. To remove it just remove the rubber coin holder behind the arm rest then use a plastic trim removal tool to pry starting from the corners near the shifter. Pop-out those corners then lift up towards the backseat. Installation is reverse.
