There is absolutely nothing wrong with the system...its saves gas and improves economy. I have not had one problem with the system. True, there are conditions that have to be met for the engine to shut off, but for the most part, I get increased efficiency
If it was as seamless as say the Toyota Prius in restarting it would be fine but mine shudders and is not at all sophisticated. Luckily for some reason it has stopped working and at my last service I instructed them to not fix it!

I didn't drive in stop/start traffic that day so couldn't say much from personal experience. As an average consumer, if someone comes up and tell me that my car will stop and start at stop light, I would have that concern. Yep it is kinda baseless I know

When it works for me, Its seamless. No shaking or shuddering. And I like the idea that I am not wasting gas while stopped.

I asked my service advisor at Smythe European and his answer is "every restart uses the starter". http://media.daimler.com/dcmedia/0-9...0-0-0-0-0.html says starter motor is redesigned ... eight times longer life ...

If you read the description closely, it does not say it uses the starter, but a direct start?

I was told by my SA it doesn't use the started, again as someone mentioned, like a golf cart

i got it, in my C300 2013 and i love it, ( 11 184 miles ) as for now.

i have an average of 32 Mpg , also if you do not press completely on the brake , the car won't shut down.( only on green ECO light ).

if you don't like it simply turn it off,

Other then that , nice upgrade from my 08 i had before.

Well I have just had the last service before the warranty expires and they tell me they found the battery in the boot (Auxiliary) had failed and that is why the ECO Stp Start wasn't working. Apparently it doesn't throw a code but now its back.

There are a bunch of inputs for this system. The criteria must be met for the "ECO" (in dash, not button) light to turn green and the system to be active. Those inputs are:
-engine running @ operating temperature
-hood is closed
-vehicle had to have gone over 15mph in this key cycle
-outside temp
-in cabin temp
-battery voltage
-air conditioning demand

It does say it uses the starter. Which is why the starter needed to be redesigned. You can't start an engine in a car without using the starter motor first. Well a car with a gas engine...

At least that is my understanding.

You do not need a starter to start the engine if the ECU knows where the pistons are,and which one to fire the spark plug / add fuel.

Firing a single spark plug for a piston that is near TDC and then firing in the proper order will start the engine without a starter.

An internal combustion engine can't crank itself on its own. This is why early cars had manual cranks.

Irrespective. When the car starts again from an ECO stop you can clearly hear the starter motor cranking the engine.
