front differential noise
I have a 2008 c230 Mercedes.
it has a Front differential grinding noise. Diagnosed as the barring. When I drive I can hear the grinding noise. The faster you go the louder it gets.
Mercedes wants me to change the whole transmission (saying that is the only option)
Reading some of the threads for other models - It seems like people have changed just the bearings.
I have been told all sorts of things like the differential box cannot be opened or it is connected to the transmission and cannot be separated etc etc..
Anyone know if the box can be opened and if the bearings can be changed? Even better - anyone know which bearings I need so I can find a mechanic that can order and fix.
I want to make sure I do not cause more issues and cost then needed.
It would be great to be able to take the information to a mechanic and show them that is what would work.. As most do not seem to have too much experience with this issue.
I am worried that something will break in there and cause more damage if I don't get this fixed ASAP
Thanks for your help.

Well, not sure how far along you've gotten in your research,
but I think I've got my plan together.
Yes, these guys despite the bickering do have the bearings needed.
The pinion bearings and races are the ones that are hard to get.
I spoke to a differential repair shop in my area, and asked if they were able to source them, no.
But they're perfectly willing for me to supply the bearings and they will perform the labor for $400-500 or perhaps a little more depending on how much time it takes.
So yeah, I'm gonna order the pinion bearings or perhaps just the whole set which is about 325 350 from one of those "chuckleheads" and hopefully have this taken care of by next week for under a grand. My GF will be soo happy. Her car ya know.
Still no answer for which bearings would work for my car.
If you are able to ask the person you found - they might be able to tell me what to order and from where
2008 c230
Any help would be appreciated.

If you really have a C230 2008 4 matic, I'd suggest asking this question
over at benzworld W204 forum since there's a more international community there.
Your model was not sold in the US so no point in me asking a mechanic here!
Ah, just saw a youtube vid, 2.5L 6 cyl inline. The C240 lives on as the C230.
All this badge engineering...ha.
PM me your VIN, and I'll poke around the EPC and see if there are PN"s for the bearings from
mercedes. Won't tell you what Timken pn's they are, but perhaps armed with the pn's you can go to the local dealer and see for yourself.
