How long do they last?

Six years on mine. Just replaced this month and not because it was going bad but because the headlamp control unit was defective and was draining the battery and dealer replaced the battery just a precaution because it was not holding the right amount of charge. There is a transparent tube connected on the negative terminal and I am curious what does that tube is for.

I just change them every 3-4 years. Batteries aren't expensive so why take a chance on getting stuck on a freezing cold day?
