With 4Matic, do you really have to replace both front tires?

I know there is a lot of info on this and most places say that you do have to replace all tires, but why would this be the case if you have differential? Isn't the whole point of differential to allow one wheel to rotate more than the other? That should solve the concern of having a new tire on one side IMO. But Im no expert...

Yes. When one wheel rotates faster than the other, it causes wear to the diff. If this is constantly happening such as with different sized tires, your diff will wear prematurely. Additionally, the awd system has to work harder to manage where the power goes due to one corner having more grip than the rest. Plus, your car will judt handle funny (4matic or not) with one tire worn and one new.
