What's this camera on my windshield for?

Just got the car about a week ago and as I was cleaning the windshield I noticed a camera by the windshield wiper sensors.. I tried googling it but couldn't find anything that fits the description for a 2012 C250..

I think it's for the ILS headlights, or rain-sensing wipers... one of the two.

I'm 99% sure you're correct. The rain sensing sensor thing is on the dash IIRC.

The camera is for the lane track assist and for the bixenon headlamps. Look in the owners manual, all the information is there

Its JUST for the Adaptive High Beam Assist of the ILS which someone suggested in a previous post. I wanted to know EXACTLY what it did and why it needed the camera. The camera detects the object in front of your vehicle and basically will adjust the watts it will use on the headlamps.

Any owners who have the ILS should just keep their highbeam ALWAYS on since the camera will automatically turn them on/off for you. (I never knew this before)

Took me a while to figure it out since I would google "Mercedes C250 windshield camera" and it came up with a bunch of features that were for 2014+ models.

ILS on a facelift W204 is very uncommon, more so with the 2012 vehicles, and more so with a C250. You're fortunate to have one!

Long story short, the Tsunami from the 2011 earthquake in Japan wiped out some suppliers for headlight components. Mercedes was only building a set number of cars with the lights per week, and those slots were filling up fast. ILS was a requirement for me, and it turned my ordering process into a 6 month wait.

As I stated in an earlier post, the camera is for the Lane Tracking Assist (the camera looks at the lanes in the road and sends a vibration and warning tone if you get out of your lane without putting on turn signal), as well as for the Adaptive High Beam Assist (the camera sees opposing traffic headlamps and turn down the beam of the light as not to blind oncoming traffic).

It is not just for the headlights

It is not just for the headlights

It is just for the headlights, Lane keeping systems have stereoscopic cameras which are mounted approx 30cm apart(stereoscopic means two or more).

So not sure why this got necrobumped but I have a story regarding the factory in Japan as well...

I was looking at a 2012 mustang (before I ended up getting this car) and it had a big navigation screen, and it was OEM. I had never seen a single mustang with this screen. It's because the factory in Japan had been wiped out because of the tsunami.

Turns out it effected Mercedes as well.
