The spare tire well was built to hold a full size spare tire and usual other stuff but most were shipped with the compact spare. (Regular wheel spare was extra cost item) . That's why all of the space
Your spare tire area looks like a nice place to store items to keep them from sliding around in the trunk. Any idea what part numbers are needed for the tirefit kit and have you ever used it in an emergency? I cannot seem to find the full kit for sale anywhere. Also, I wonder how the cover w/rear battery looks...because that is how my car is set up.

The extra space in the spare tire well is for the flat full-size tire that the small spare replaces. If it didn't fit in the well, you'd have to carry the flat inside the car, or in the trunk itself- either of which might be filled with passengers and/or luggage.

I was thinking of removing the spare altogether and purchasing the Tirekit as mentioned above for a few reasons:
-shave some weight
-my gf car does not have a spare, it has the same emergency kit
-I have like 6 different roadside assistances that I pay for in one way or another (insurance, wheel warranty, mbrace....). Might as well use them if I need to.
It's normal. I have lots of room also. The first aid kit should be in the compartment on the left by the rear tail light
if it is used you may not have a spare key/a first aid kit/an owners manual & they may have even take the Becker auto pilot/GPS out Usually the extra space next to the spare is where the battery would have gone, it is now located under/behind the cabin air filter cover...so don't worry about the extra space in the trunk...enjoy it to put you own tool/car maintenance stuff....
