What exactly are the Mercedes media interface cables for?

I have a 2012 C300 (base Sport) and I've seen these media interface cables online. They have one end for the phone and one that plugs into the USB port in the the console.

What's the benefit of having this over a regular charger cable? and is there anyway to make the USB port charge my iPhone?

Does anyone know if you can tap into the cigarette lighter's power?
