Exclamation Airbag Error Message? '12 C300

Hi, I had to change out the trim on my steering wheel, which meant disconnecting the airbag. I read some tutorials and they said as long as you are careful it was safe to do. I removed everything and put it all back with no problem.

My one mistake was not disconnecting the battery. Now I have an error message as well as the "airbag off" light lit up under the button for my flashers.

My question is: as long as the airbag was installed properly (its only one connection and two springs that hold it down), will it work properly? I'm assuming it is only showing an error message because the computer recognizes that it was disconnected at some point. As long as its got a good connection, it should be fine, right?

I mean had I taken it to Mercedes, would they have done anything differently? (besides unplugging the battery)

not sure if this helps. never did it on the benz but for my audi when i removed the seats, even if i disconnect or leave the battery connected alone it didnt make a difference. I had to start the car up with the airbag connection off cause i had to move something after everything was done i got an airbag error light on. now some people on the audi forum are saying even if the airbags are connected and senors are in working order but if the airbag light is tripped the whole system will not activate if anything, and some are saying it will work even if the error light is on. The only thing i had to do is use vag-com to clear the error message and all good. hope this helps.

also not sure if you try yet, disconnect the battery to see if it resets or not.

The SRS system may not work in an accident if that light is on. If you brought it to the dealer, they would have unplugged the battery during repair and then cleared codes set during installation. If you call, I'm sure they wouldn't charge much at all just to clear the codes.

So if I get the code reset and get the light off I can insure the SRS will function properly?

I'm planning on buying an OBD scanner/decoder. That will do everything I need to make sure the airbag will deploy correct?

The SRS should properly function unless the light is illuminated. Make sure if you get an OBD II scanner it can support Mercedes-Benz SRS as well. Most scanners do not support SRS and even the ones that do may not support MB unless stated. Your dealer may clear it for $35-$65. It would be worth a phone call imo.
