Mechanical Keys ..

Hi, does any know if the dealer gives two mechanical keys upon new delivery? I know we get two smart keys.. but do they also usually give the little "L" key that attaches inside the smart key fob?

I'm wondering because although I have 2 key fobs, I seem to only have 1 of the mechanical keys. And it's driving me nuts wondering if I may have lost one of the mechanical keys.

TIA!

Each smart key will have a removable physical key (without which, you wouldn't be able to attach the smart key to a key-ring). Aside from buying a new smart key, I don't believe you can buy the physical key separately.

I lost one of my physical L-keys on my C63 and I just bought this off ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Smart-Remote-Key-Keyless-Replacement-Uncut-Blade-Blank-For-Mercedes-Benz-/311039634723?hash=item486b682d23&vxp=mtr
And I brought my other L key and had it cut, so far so good.

Does anyone have any idea to what the L key is even supposed to do?

When your battery goes flat in your key can open the door or if your car battery is flat you can open the door

It's supposed to be that you lock any valuables in the glove compartment, and when you give your key up for valet service, you remove the mechanical L key (along with the rest of the keys in your keyring). But it's a bit funny because most valet like to attach tags on the key. And once you remove the L key, there seems to be no place for them to attach the tag (or hang your key up in their valet box).

I learned my lesson not letting any valet drive my car. I once caught the valet driving like mad using my car and filmed him while in the act and he ended being fired on the spot.

I use the L key to scratch those lotto tickets.

That's not good. Hearing stories like that makes me want to get a dashcam -- not for the reckless driving, but for more subtle accidents like them bumping a car.

I also bought a replacement key blade off amazon/ebay, but be warned the pictures might show the benz symbol and signature, yet mine did not. Even without the symbols, the key looked good and fit perfectly. I also got $4 off the $8 blade price when I mentioned the lack of symbols. I had to have it laser cut at a special locksmith and it cost $35. After laser cutting, the blade would sit loosely in the key and would wobble every time I moved the key. I wrapped a film of tape over the blade edge and now it sits nice and snug. I only ever use the key blade for emergencies, so the tape shouldn't be a problem.

Wow, I'm truly a idiot. I thought the glove box key hole was only for dealers to use. FML.

I have the whole key on a lanyard. When I go surfing or Paddle boarding I simply remove the metal key, stick it around my neck and lock the ignition key in the car. Simple and safe.

It also can lock the glove compartment, as well as disable the trunk switch that's on the door for when you want to secure them (i.e. - when you valet park the car)

That's why I bought a blank L key on eBay and keep in the glovebox until I need to use it for as a valet key ring for the fob.
