Need opinion ASAP on replacing rear differential on C300 '08

Hey all,

My C300 '08 rear wheel with only 70k miles has been having noise coming from the back for a month and at first, I thought it was the wheel bearings so I got both replaced then the noise is still there...
Then my mechanic called and told me that the noise is actually from the bad rear differential.
He offers me 2 solutions
1.order a kit to fix it which will cost a bit more than the other choice but it will be a guaranteed. He said the kit will cost around $500 and with labor it should end up around $1k (he is a good friend of mine so he charges almost nothing)
2. To get a used one on ebay or junk yard, this way it is unsure when it will brake again but shouldn't one last a lifetime anyway? I found some on ebay for $350-500

Has any of you ever experienced this or known someone with this problem? I have been searching and forums and parts for quite sometime and thought that I might as well post one here!!

Thanks!!

It sounds as if your wheel bearings were bad.. You know the rumbling sound at low rpm.. Plus high pitch softly. What does yours sound like? Have you checked if it is not wheel bearings yet?

I just googled wheel bearing sounds and mine doesn't sound anywhere near as bad. I just get a louder than normal transmission whine compared to every other car I've driven or been in.
