Mercedes C200 Sport CDI
5 secs of Clicking/rattling on every startup
Hey guys, I have a 2010 c200 diesel.
It makes a rattling noise which last for 5 seconds whenever I start it up. The cold the engine the larger it is but you can even hear it when the engine have been off for 10 mins and started again. It's also getting progressively louder. Any ideas ??

The warm start engine knock was a "feature" of the M276 3.5L DI gas engine, corrected by check valves, chain tensioners and about 8 hours of service.
No idea if it something a C200 diesel engine suffers from as well.

Hey JaredP if you don't get the noise clutter repaired on the new DI engines would it damage anything in the long run?

When I was initially troubleshooting the issue, I was constantly re-assured by MB techs that it was just a part of how the DI engines operate. I kept pushing, until a MB tech posted an internal MB document outlining the issue and the fix on these forums. Only when I forwarded this internal MB document to my service department did they even consider the rattling an issue.
The document might have more information than I do regarding the long term effects of the rattling. I understand that the rattling is only a side effect of oil pressure building up on startup, so I don't suspect that it has any long term effects.
I uploaded the document here:

Thanks. I have to listen to my ML and GLK for this noise as I barely hear the two cars as it is driven by the other half and she is deaf on this kind of noise.
