Steering wheel vibration

My parents bought a 2007 Mercedes c280 4 Matic and there is a small steering wheel vibration at 40-45mph and a small steering wheel shimmy at 65mph and up. Is this normal? I did hit an average size pothole on the highway at 79mph. Could this average pothole have caused the steering wheel shimmy? I know cars are supposed to be able to withstand potholes. I'm sure it was there at 40-45 before I hit the pothole and I'm pretty sure it was there at 65mph and up before I hit the pothole but I can't remember if it was the same or less?

Thanks. I'm worried I damaged the car. My question is could an average pothole cause a steering wheel shimmy or should the car be able to withstand it? Do other people have this problem?

Impossible to say. You could have bent the wheel. If there was a vibration issue before hitting the pothole it could be wheels out of balance, the alignment, worn tires or something in the front suspension. At that age things start to wear.

What are the condition of the tires? That would be a logical place to start. You might want to rotate the tires and see if the feel changes at all. If so, could be the tires or a wheel out of balance. That would be the simplest and and cheapest way to start troubleshooting this.

Good luck! Let everyone know how it turns out.
