turn signals not working

The turn signals on my 2008 c300 4MATIC have acted up over the past year or more. Started out that my left would signal if I active the signal to turn right and vice versa. Eventually the signals stopped working all together. I can usually correct the issue by turning the car off and on, but it's not long before I lose the turn signals again. The dealer ran a diagnostic and said the computer shows it's something with the steering column, but he is not sure what. He recommended I replace it. Before I spend $1K+, I want to be sure this is right. There seem to be a lot of complaints about turning signals, but no clear resolution that I can find. Thank you!

I don't think this is the first mention I've seen of them reversing like that.

Thanks, michail71. I've seen several posts with similar quandaries: opposite signals activating; signals alternating, rather than just the one direction activating; signals going out all together. I've experienced each of these issues. I can't seem to locate in the threads what the resolution is, so am hoping this fresh post will inspire some responses!

If I had to guess I would think it's something in the switch.

This is a big safety issue.
