Dipstick Reading - Art or Science

Once the engine is hot and then shut off it takes a fair amount of time for the oil in the engine to drain back into the pan (longer than in other cars I've owned).
The manual recommends:
Park the vehicle on a level surface.
To check the oil level with the engine at operating temperature, switch the engine off and wait for approximately five minutes.
Pull oil dipstick out of the dipstick guide tube
Wipe off oil dipstick.
Slowly slide oil dipstick : into the guide tube to the stop, and take it out again.
If the level is between MIN mark and MAX mark the oil level is correct.

Was scary the first time I've checked it!
Pulled the stick out when cold not a drop of oil I **** my pants, put it in again than pulled it out it was spot on (did it once more to make sure and it was perfect)

Oh, and on the subject of the dipstick, it appears that the Germans engineered the dipstick with the serrations on it so that they would collect oil and fill in the grooves making it easy to read. NOT! Especially with fresh oil after a change. More like impossible. Sorry, but a plain metal stick with a couple of dimples punched in it for full and add is still the best IMHO.
