Is this a rip off?

Dear MBWorld,

I got an estimate today to have my stock 17" wheels on my 2013 C300 powdercoated satin black and the guy told me just under $600. Now I know that would definetly be exoensive if I was just strictly having them powdercoated. But this is the cost of them removing the wheels from the car and then from the tire and powdercoating them, then putting it all back on my car and adjusting the wheel balance or whatever. So do you think thats a fair price?

Thanks,
Nick

Have you heard of plastidip? You can probably accomplish what you want for $50 in plastidip and it will look very close to satin black.

The process is fairly simple too, just take the wheel off, tape around where you don't want the paint to go, and then give it a few coats. I would guess probably one can per wheel to get it done right.

Yes they are actually currently dipped. However, one if my locking lugs seems to be stripped and or really tight so I couldn't get it off and had to plastidip the wheels while on the car so it just came out okay. Thanks tho!

That's a hair high. I used to powdercoat for a performance shop a few years back. Average price for a single coat (matte or satin)(gloss is consider 2 coat with the base and then a clear) was $75 for a 17" and $85 for a 18" etc etc. If you brought us the wheels without tires it would've run around $350 with tax for a single stage satin.

Hey Nick! I'd say that is a ripoff depending on how many coating stages it goes through. Servicing your tires, tpms, putting everything back together is slight work, maybe 75 bucks for the labor of the tires at most. I would possibly look into plastidip with a gloss top coat like someone mentioned above, but from my experience plastidip loses its luster in a couple weeks. For reference, I got a quote recently from a local company https://www.instagram.com/rj_coatings/ Check them out, they are having a sale right now until the end of June on single stage matte & high gloss blacks 15-17" 280$, 18-19" $325

I personally would never take off a tire that doesn't need to be replaced. after the last fiasco I went though. Long story short had to buy a new tire $250 down the drain, THANK GOD my tires were 3000km old if they were more worn i'd be ****ed and have to buy 4 new ones (damn 4Matic)

I would just plasti dip and if your not happy, when you need new tires get the powder coating done and save a few hundred bucks.
