Just to add on to what edgalang mentioned.....
In my opinion, and from my used car buying experience, sometimes it's just plain luck.
I thought I was getting the deal of the century when I bought my '05 C55. Before settling on the C55 I purchased, I test drove another used C55 that was for sale, and a used S4 Avant. The C55 I bought drove really nice, and the previous owner had all the receipts from the Benz dealer where it was serviced at. And Carfax matched all the service records he had. The C55 lived it's life in Wilkes-Barre PA (where it was serviced at), before I took it to NYC.
Many times when you carfax a car, it could have a very colorful history, going across the country from one dealer to another, from one auction to another.
So my C55 looked like a safe bet.
