How to install NTG4 DVD Map Update

Hi folks.


I recently purchased a bootlegged copy of the 2016/2017 NTG4 DVD Map Update to load onto my 2009 C300 COMAND navigation system. I got 2 DVD discs but the person who sold me the software failed to include the installation instructions.


I thought it would be simple where you just insert the first and second map DVDs into the CD/DVD player and let them run by themselves but unfortunately it didn't do anything.


I looked on Youtube to see if there are any DIY videos and I wasn't able to find any. Do any of you guys have any information on how to install the updates?

I have 2016 DVDs and assume the install is the same as 2017. Dealer installed it for me so I don't know how. Hope my scanned pdf is clear enough.

i purchased my discs from mapmap60 on ebay. north america 2017 CDs were about $20. you just stick in CD one, while the truck is in accessory, it will start the update process. leave it alone, it will ask for CD 2 around 96% and finish. thats all. it will take about 2 hours and you should have the vehicle on a charger while this is happening.

You appear to be more fortunate in the US than Europe.

All I can find on eBay is genuine disks costing > £200.

Update: So the first disc was accepted by the COMAND system and it asked for the second disc to be inserted when disc one reached 96% (you were totally right). The problem I am now encountering is the COMAND system will not feed and accept disc two for some reason. The system will not allow me to select different menus and the disc feeder remains shut. Do I have to somehow forcibly remove the first disc or is there a trick to feed in the second disc?

do not panic. the same thing happened to me on one of the two trucks i updated. even if you power cycle the truck you wont ruin anything, although i wouldnt recommended doing that.

just continue to try combinations of ejecting, go to different modes, with the selector, try selecting insert CD, continue to try every combination of the CD sub menu, the head unit eject button, and the CD load (when all the empty discs appear on the display).

I was really stuck on my friends 2009 GLK but it eventually allowed us to insert the 2nd disc. my GLK was more compliant but i had to get it to the menu where it shows the CDs on the screen first.

When the unit is asking for the second disc, all you have to do is to use the knob wheel in order to move around into other menus (e.g. Radio, Telephone, System). The navigator unit wont respond to the eject button until moving to Radio or System and for this only the knob can be used. Then is only needed to eject the first disc and insert the second one. When the message "insert the second disc" still appears in the screen, just click with the knob wheel to make the navigator unit search for the new disc inserted. Then the upgrade will continue.

Yes I still have year 2016 that dealer installed for me, I also found I have a set of year 2017 disks, don't remember where and why I got that year version.
Are you in Australia? My disks are for North America (US and Canada).

-Every 10 years, I buy a 12 year old Mercedes...

If anyone still seeing this, my 2012 coupe with an NTG 4.0 is stuck asking for DVD #2.

Any advice appreciated.

hi there! in the off chance you see this, I’ve had an issue with my nav for a year. It’s been stuck on a rotating earth “awaiting navigation” for so long. It happened randomly one day during a back from local outing. Never any issues or anything. Dealer can’t seem to figure out why and keep saying a software update is needed but that I’m out of warranty? Anyway, I’m in Canada and have a 2017 c300 4matic sedan. If there’s any way you could send me the file as well, I’d be forever grateful.

@C300CA is talking about the Map version, not about the Model Year of the car. In 2017 there is another Head Unit and you can find the Mercedes Downloader Software here on forum or MBUSA.

Anyway, if your Head Unit is defective or blocked it will not let you to upload a new Map Version.

if you read my reply, I’m also talking about the map version and needing a software update. Head unit not defective according to Benz. They said software update and nothing about head units being blocked. But for some reason they won’t do it because “I’m out of warranty.” SO yeah, if anyone has a Canada nav dvd they can send me, I’d be grateful and willing to pay.

Sir, you are a little bit confused.

Your Head Unit use "Software" not only for Map's.
Imagine that your unit it's just a little computer that has BIOS ( the bootloader SW) the OS and the programs.( also software ). One of the programs from third SW is the Navi.

ill be honest, I think between the two of us, I’m more confused and I’m not car savvy (though I’ve tried to research and troubleshoot the issue). I honestly don’t know where to start - I presume it’s the ntg5 but again, I can’t say. I wouldn’t know where to start in terms of knowing what to ask for for a unit repair or what that entails. Or even if I could do it by myself.

It either stays black or the screen has a rotating earth with activating nav going around. If I don’t exit the screen to media let’s say, the screen stays stuck on that nav screen until I turn the car off lock it and then after a few minutes, unlock and restart the car.

Okay, I am preparing files for 2017 map, DVD1 and DVD2. I haven't sent any files here before, is there a file size limit through email?

I’m not too sure, I’d think if it’s sent in 2 separate messages it should be okay? There’s an option to send a private message and there should be an option to send private message that goes to my email. If you have trouble with that, I can PM you my email you can send it to? so if it helps I found that it’s NTG5/5.5 if that helps at all. Local MB said again, “you (meaning I) shouldn't have done a wireless update - we (local MB) can’t do much because it’s out of warranty and doing a software update can brick the system.”

Again, I don’t know what a wireless MB update is is, let alone how to do it; I never knew updates were needed until this problem started and I researched what could be at issue, if it’s even a nav update. Total loss right now

I have compressed two DVDs, DVD1 is 8GB, DVD2 is 280MB, too big files for email. My yahoo email and Gmail are both limited to 25MB.
