Whining noise when accelerating if AC is on

Whining noise when accelerating if AC is on
I am getting a whining noise when AC is on and its gets louder in pitch when I accelerate, this occurs when the compressor kicks in. What could be the possible cause?

I have had a whining noise from the AC when on & lightly loaded ie not a hot day. It has been there for years. The A/C works perfectly. A/C mechanics say I could add gas & it may fix it. I have not bothered.
