battery warning light

C200
battery warning light
The C200 shows a red battery warning on the dashboard. It is intermittent and I can switch off the engine, restart and can drive for a few klms before it re-appears. Any suggestions as to the cause.
It is 5 years old and only 17000 klms(yes 17000) and is driven by my wife

That symbol is for the charging system. Could be the belt system like the tensioner or alternator pulley or the voltage regulator. The pulley can go bad over time as can the belt tensioner. Have you checked the voltage at the battery when off and under load?

Even though it isn't driven much it could be that your battery is getting weak. Five years with the same battery . . . I would have the battery checked to see if it is still good.
