2003 Civic recently started extreme slowdown when removing foot from accerator

2003 Honda Civic, automatic, has recently started an extreme slowdown as if brakes are being applied when coasting. It has not done this this previously. Any suggestions as to what is wrong? I hate to take it to a shop without some idea of what is wrong - afraid they'll rip me off.

An interesting problem though. I'm curious to know what the issue is.

You do realize that this is a Mercedes-Benz forum and not a Honda forum don't you.

Internet mistakes happen, but I'm think it must be some kind of transmission issue. A stuck brake would have burnt up and made a stink.
