I've been using an iPod in my cars for years. However, I now use a USB Flash Drive inserted into the car's USB slot. Use a compact size and it almost disappears and is safely out of the way. The car's entertainment system works about as well as the iPod and my iPod is safe in my house. Downloading the music files from iTunes on my computer was accomplished by using the "export for iTunes" app ($7.99). It took a little while to do but it's a nice alternative to using the iPod. The only meaningful downside it that each time you start the car it take a few minutes for the complete library to load. It will continue to play the album, playlist, etc that was on when the car was turned off.
