Even if the rotors were installed backwards wouldn't that just affect cooling some? Could it also reduce the stopping power that much to be unacceptable?

General question for all.

How long - how many miles - should the factory original pads last under
"Granny" type conditions of very easy driving with rare 'stomping' of the brake pedal.

Logically I'd agree. I think your right in that the mechanic just probably didn't bleed correctly and he corrected it when the OP came back.

I was watching him the first time when things went wrong. I dont think he did anything with bleeding the brakes.
Not sure if he did it the second time.

Most of the videos I have watched on replacing pads/rotors don't say I should bleed the brakes.

While I'm a fan of Zimmerman rotors, I don't like the Akebono pads. Their only positive seems to be that they're low dust, which they're actually not bad at, But everything else seems to be considerably worse than OEM. They don't handle heavy braking well - their effective temperature range seems to be noticeably lower and more narrow than OEM. Their initial bite is weaker. They seem to wear decently, but they won't be good for that entire time with faster driving. That being said, I still prefer the Akebono to TRW. TRW are phenomenally noisy and dusty without the performance to justify either

Just watched this...maybe the problem with the initial bite (for OP) was that the coating between the rotor and pad was not yet worn.

Zimm/Ake - happy customer now

My initial problem was that the brakes didn’t stop the car even if I floored the pedal. There was very little braking

not sure what he fixed but everything is fine now. I am happy with the brakes

Unfortunately, I have no idea what was fixed by my mechanic the second time.

As Edgalang mentioned it was probably inappropriate bleeding the first time.
