Oil around the spark plug C250

Hi Everyone,

My car is a 2013 C250 sport with 64K miles. Today I changed the spark plugs and when I removed the spark plugs there was some oil around both ends of the spark plugs. It was the same on all 4 plugs. Is this normal? I attached a picture of the plugs anyone know if these look normal for 64K miles. I use 0w40 oil and live in Florida. The oil is golden brown in color and I’ve never had to add oil between changes. TIA.

If it was pooled around the top of the plug, that usually means either the valve cover is leaking around the plug or it's simply a matter of folks spilling a bit when filling the engine after an oil change. The oil on the bottom of the plug is likely just the oil at the top dripping down as you pulled it out. I'd clean it up the best you can and check on them during your next oil change. If you find more oil, your valve cover gaskets are probably on their way out.

Since the car seems to be running well and I don’t seem to be losing oil I decided to just clean up replace the plugs and check in on it next time I do an oil change. It does seem odd that a careless oil change would get oil all the way to the back spark plug though and that it affected all 4 similarly. Thanks

Yeah spilled oil isn't the most likely case in this situation, but it wouldn't be the first time. I did have a thought though: check any hose or wires running over or near the ignition coils. Oil can travel down them and end up in other spots, appearing to be an oil leak in that spot. Again, it's a bit of a reach but it's worth checking all of these things before you go yanking valve covers.

Oil in ignition cylinder 12 c250

Greetings so I guess either a slow leak or a new leak in cylinder one since I hadn't replaced the ignitions coils and spark plugs in a while I did both but cylinder one is filling slowly, so I guess that means I have a leak can anyone tell me what it entails to fix and what needs to be done I haven't a clue. Tha ks so very much.

Valve cover gasket most likely needs to be changed . Not too hard to do might be some videos on YouTube and if you search the forum
you should see some instructions .

As C250OLI indicated it's the valve cover gasket that is leaking. Item 29 is the culprit. There is one for each cylinder and if it's leaking then oil will drip down into the spark plug tube and around the spark plug. By the way, when your replace 29 (*4) you also need to replace 26.

If your DIY and are planning on purchasing an aftermarket gasket, Just make sure to purchase the valve cover gasket kit. Some retailers will sell either the valve cover gasket by itself, or offer a kit which comes with the valve cover spark plug seals. Usually these manufactures that Business's outsource the product from will have a surplus, and will try to liquidate their inventory regardless if the consumer requires additional pieces/parts for a proper repair/install.

If oil is leaking through the ignition coil well into the chamber and coating The spark plug terminals then it means the spark plug is not making a tight seal. That should lead to sputtering, knocking and misfiring, no?

There is oil in the well, but it's leaking from inside the top of the engine through the compromised gasket 29. The ignition coil is dry, but the oil in the well ends up seeping through the spark plug tube and covering the tip of the plug. Eventually, it may cause a misfire or sputtering.

Here is a picture of oil sitting in the wells before the gaskets were replaced. Although the spark plugs are correctly torqued, the oil does seep down around the threads to the tip of the spark plugs.
