C350 Sport
New member - some help required please

Hi all, new member hoping for some help. So i bought a 2008 C350 Sport at the start of the year and it has been very nice to drive with no issues, however, over the last week or so a few issues have developed. Will try and keep them brief, any help on what the possible causes are would be appreciated:

1) On start up there is a loud whine which continues for 10/15 seconds then stops and then returns for another 10/15 seconds after temp gets to around 60. This only happens when car is cold and after driving I dont hear it again until the car has been allowed to sit overnight.

2) When turning (left or right) there is a rubbing/tapping noise coming from front which increases in speed with wheel speed and is more prevelant when turning left. I suspect that the rotor could be warped as there is slight judder when braking, could this cause a tapping? I have checked the wheel bearing and there is slight play but not enough to fail the MOT last week. Is it possible that the bearing needs to be tightened and if so how tight?

3) As i drove the car out of the garage that MOT’d it the airbag light came on along with the following warnings (pre tensioner inoperative consult workshop) and (driver front airbag malfunction). I scanned the codes and two are showing: front row voltage too high and driver buckle fault. The warning on the dash comes and goes when turning and the drivers seatbelt warning light comes on depending on how i am sat in the seat, whether seatbelt is worn or not. Possible faulty sensor in the seatbelt receiver or damaged wiring perhaps?

I have been hit with 3 issues all at once which is annoying but with 106000 miles to be expected I guess.

For the whine, I'm guessing it's the secondary air pump. The same thing happened to me. You can confirm it's the problem by having someone start the engine while you're listening to the engine with the hood up. You should be able to get an idea of where the sound is coming from. Also, as soon as you hear the noise, you can unplug the pump to confirm that the noise stops. Obviously you don't have a ton of time to do this, so practice unplugging it ahead of time. It may throw a code but the code should go away as soon as you plug it back in.

Alternatively you can hotwire the pump directly to the battery to get it to spin so you can hear it working.

The good news is if the pump is indeed the issue it's not too expensive and not too hard to replace. They can be had from FCP Euro for $120. Just search for Bosch 0001405185. No need to go OEM in this case; the original pump is Bosch branded. It was also recommended to me that the fuse and relay be replaced at the same time.

Apparently the motor can be blown out with compressed air which will get rid of the noise, but I've heard that the dust in the motor is worn components which means it's just a matter of time before it's making noise again.

This video is an excellent resource.

Reply:

1-Seems normal although I only hear it once, maybe I miss the 2nd time(s) because then I'm driving.

2-When they check the bearing, the other problems around there should should stare them in the face.
