When I driving the car with gear D , and I change it to manual gear( I don't know how to explain it) , It will turn to D1 , but not to D4 or D3 . Why will like this?

It should go into a certain gear depending on how fast you are currently driving. If the car is at a stop and you switch to manual mode it would go into D1. If the car is travelling at 55 and goes into D1 then you've got problems. But as I remember it seemed to automatically upshift anyways if you waited too long to shift or tried to hold the RPMs at redline.

I believe it should drop you to one gear lower than your current gear.

I think it will change to D1 even I drive fast or slow . Everytime I drive and shift down , it will become D1 but not D4 . I have W211 and I drive it how fast , I shift down it also change to D4 then D3. It never happen like W204 it will directly change to D1 . I thinking is it the setting or mine has problem

This is true if it is in "S" (Sport) mode, also if full throttle is applied to start the vehicle moving or if it is manually shifted into D1. Otherwise, while in "C" (Comfort) mode, the vehicle starts out in 2nd gear (or D2, if you prefer that type reference).

Right... It is RPM based and it need not be at redline, instead, depending on which gear you are in and the mapping of RPM/gear position.

What does happen ar redline, is that the fuel supply is cut-off to protect the engine.

It shouldn't. if it does, means the transmission software is all screwed up and needs to be re-flashed.

Sport mode is the only way I drive so I'm unaware of what happens in the other mode. I believe mine is "E" for eco or etarded, something to that effect.

The W211 with the 722.6 5-speed transmission before 2005 will do D4 then D3.... In 2005, the 722.6 was updated so that the transmission will go to the lowest gear possible when you hit the - which is how the W204 behaves as well with the 722.9 transmission.

I figured out my w204 c250 doesn’t have a manual mode, but only a gear limit mode (d1, d2, d3, d4, etc.). Would it be terrible to use it as a manual mode as in shifting through and downshifting it myself, or would that harm the transmission?

You need to provide a little more info, such as the year of the car.

It’s a 2013 c250, sport sedan. I was just curious about the gear limit mode and all of that, I really don’t want to hurt the transmission and all of that, thanks!

That’s fine. It’s not going to let you hurt it.
You’re probably going to be a bit disappointed using the D1-2-3… mode to shift the transmission. It’s not particularly responsive. It’s okay if you just want to get down an extra gear coming off corners, but that’s about it. The transmission is still communicating with the ECU. It will either limit the RPM or shift to a suitable gear to protect the engine and transmission if driven outside of safe limits.

Try driving in S mode. If I remember correctly, the 722.9 transmission with M271 EVO engine has a WOT shift point of 6750 RPM in S and it’s screaming at that point.

Very interesting! Thank you brother, I really appreciate it. I use it often because I love hearing the pops from my car while down shifting, I feel so much better now knowing I’m not hurting my transmission.
