W204 Merc C220 CDi Sport - ESP Not Available - Car Down On Power

Hello all. Apologies in advance for the long post.

So I bought the above car from a friend a few months ago. It's an 08 model with 118k miles

He said it had recently had one new injector and three new injector nozzles fitted, so I wouldn't have to worry about them for a while.

I had noticed a slight uneven engine idle when I test drove the car, which caused a bit more vibration than I expected from a car like this (when stationary), but he said this was normal, and the car had always been this way but never gave any problems.

The next day while driving the car the 'ESP currently not available - see owners manual' warning flashed up, and the yellow triangle on the dash - that shows when ESP is off - came on and stayed on. The car was immediately way down on power. I presume this is limp mode?

My friend dispatched his brother-in-law to me the next morning, equipped with his OBD scanner. The fault that showed up was related to one of the injectors. He cleared it, and the warning and yellow triangle went away. The car was back to normal power, and he suggested that his dad - also a mechanic, who done the work on the injectors - may not have cleared the old codes, and the car might be OK now.

It still had an uneven idle when stationary, fluctuating between around 900rpm down to around 750rpm. Once I depressed the clutch this went back to 900rpm, lessening the vibration.

About a week later the same warning appeared, along with the triangle lighting up yellow, and the car was again down on power.

This time I took the car to an independent Mercedes specialist, who found another injector-related code (possibly the same as before). He cleared it and all was fine again. He drove the car with the scanner connected and said it showed a couple of injectors were reading high. I was to go back to him to get whatever the problem was sorted (he said most likely injector-related) but he kept saying he had no loan car. This went on for weeks until I lost patience and went to my local mechanic. The car was OK during this time until the day I went to my mechanic - and the car went into limp mode again, same warning etc, on the way to him.

Scanner connected, another injector-related code showed up. Got it cleared, and car was OK once again. But my mechanic looked at the engine and found a faulty injector seal, which he said was blowing out air (and carbon). He said this was the problem, and he could fix it, while also getting a local Diesel engine specialist to check the injectors, just in case. He said he could tell by the engine sound that the car was missing.

So the diesel specialist check all injectors and said they were fine. My mechanic put all new seals on them, cleaned away all the carbon deposits, put everything back in place, serviced the car with all new filters etc, and said the engine was no longer missing, and that should be that.

That was a few weeks ago, and on Friday gone the same warning, triangle lighting, limp mode problem reared its ugly head again!

So back to him I went, he plugged in the scanner and up popped a load of codes mentioning short circuits, though these were listed as 'stored', so not current. The one current fault was again injector-related. Code 2071: 'injector drift cylinder 1, the lower limit value has been reached'.

Now he's guessing it's the wiring harness.

Anyway, I have organised a visit with a mechanic who has the Mercedes Star scanning system on Thursday evening. He's a Merc technician that works on cars at his home after his day in the main dealers is done. So hopefully he'll know what he's doing...

I wanted to post here in case my particular problem seems familiar to anyone, and so that hopefully, when I get to the bottom of this I can post the eventual solution, which may be of benefit to others going forwards.

So if anyone has any advice/suggestions, I'd love to hear from you.

Hi all,
how you doing?
hope this thread is still active, if so please excuse my late reply, Also if it sounds like im hijacking the thread...im sorry, please excuse me

I plugged a W211 , E220 cdi , 170hp , 2007. into a generic scan tool. ( Not star)
It came back with a code 2075-9 .. & a description

Check system high pressure control.
Max pressure exceeded via quantity control valve.

I posted this on your thread atom-ant as i entered my code into google & the title of c220 & your code 2075-009, so i read down your page.

so i hope you dont mind me asking for a bit of help.

ausmbtech, i understand the e220 cdi , engine code is om646.821 (my car) as the same kind set up.. hp pump with a quantity control valve .. pressure sensor on rail .. pressure valve on other end of the rail.

from my code 2075-9 (this is not from a star diagnostic unit) & my description ..Check system high pressure control. Max pressure exceeded via quantity control valve.

would you be thinking my qualtity control valve is failing or as failed, & again this part is next to the hp pump at the front of the engine.?

any help / ideas please.
again please excuse me if im hijacking your thread atom-ant,im sorry.

thanks a lot
