Time for an oil change and which oil to use
I'm getting a fluid extractor form harbor freight tomorrow and planing to do an oil change.
I do my own oil change in my other cars but this will be the first time in the Benz using the extractor method. I was too lazy to invest in an extractor but enough is enough. I'm tired of paying $150.00 for this. What oil do you guys recommend? I was reading up on Liqui Moly, any advise? Harbor Freight Fluid Extractor |

If you live in a colder climate, consider 0W40 instead. Walmart always has the best price for Mobil 1 0W40.

This is easy.
Don't overdo this, and just follow my suggestion. Mobil 1 0W40 "euro spec". (the latter is redundant). Buy it on sale, and get it done. It takes about 7.4 (IIRC) quarts, but I'm going off of memory. Check your manual. It also depends on if your vehicle is 4matic or not. |

If you plan on keeping the car, buy the oil filters in bulk (Mahn) from rock auto. They're under 10$ each so just buy a bunch of them and have them in stock. For the oil, as many have mentioned, Mobil 1 0w40 European Blend works just fine and goes on special quite often.

You may also find the Castrol 0W40 at some W*mart stores. Also meets the MBz spec. Both the Mobil 1 and the Castrol product are on Amazon.
Meazz, Harbor Fright sells another oil extractor that connects to you air compressor, should you have one. Very useful tool. |

Yeah, that's the one, Meazz. Price has gone way up. I guess you need their stacking coupons - - I paid right around $100 for it. Super-useful tool IF you have air power in your garage.

I don't want to goo the drain method because of the following. If I can get by w/o doing all this than why not?
1. need to put the car on a ramp 2. remove the splash board under the car |
I was told by my friend who is an MB mechanic that the 4MATIC models must use the drain method because the front axle goes through the oil pan and the extractor can never get all the oil out. He claimed that at least 1-2L will remain with the extractor method.

Good thread guys. I live in Hawaii would you guys recommend 5w40? Also I will probably use the drain. I don’t know why but I’ve never liked the idea of using a pump. No reason really just have drained it from the sump for about 15 years now |
Consider a mityvac fluid excavator.. about $80 I use this for 4 years now, over 150,000 miles in oil changes. I buy two 5L jugs of Mobil 1, 0w-40 European Spec from Walmart for about $25 each. I get the filter from the dealer for about $17-22 (not much more than aftermarket). Its easier with extractor because the filter is accessed on top, the whole process can be done in less than 15 minutes, without even getting dirty. However, I only extract on Service A intervals and during Service Bs, I drain because it gives me the opportunity to go under the car to inspection. |

Forgive me to say that are some of you guys maybe making a mountain out of a mole hill? Motul, here, is really difficult to get, and really expensive, and Mobil 1 0W40 is really easy to get and really cheap.
Why is there such a push for Motul? From a UOA perspective, even this idiotic penguin can easily get 30,000km or so out of the engine oil based on a number of factors (flashpoint, TBN, etc). For the record, I change mine every 13,000km, but just saying that Mobil 1 lasts for freaking ever in this non DI/PFI engine. So why the push for Motul? I feel like I'm missing something - perhaps it's easy to get in the US and/or cheap. Just asking :) |

To each their own. I was just reading this thread feeling like an idiot. I felt like people could be buying Motul at the same price as Mobil 1, and I was sitting here expecting to go "holy crap, those lucky Americans!", but perhaps it isn't turning out as I thought. |
I use Castrol 0W40. If I wanted the best, I'd opt for Joe Gibbs DT40. It's full synthetic developed for water cooled Porsches and extreme heat resistance.
