Electronic Starter Switch
I have another problem that has happened twice so far. It is when I unlock the car and try to start the motor but when I turn the key it is like a black out. I called the road side service thinking that my reasonable new battery had failed. The mechanic connected the jumper leads and it made no difference so he checked the battery and I tried again with the same result. He then told me to get out of the car, lock it with the remote then unlock it with the remote, which I did and the car started as if nothing happened. I was then told it was a common fault with the car.
Luckily it has only happened twice in a short period of time and not since.
I called MB and they told me that they would fix the problem as a “goodwill gesture” (that conversation was recorded) and to take it to a dealer for a report which I did and the assistant service manager said that they would not recommend that it be repaired as I was advised (as a goodwill gesture).
Does anybody know if this is a common fault?

Most likely it is your steering lock that is failing. Eventually, it will stop working and then the car will no longer start. Did the dealership perform diagnostic? Did they say what’s wrong with it?

Hi
thanks for your information but the dealer said that there were no faults recorded!
The assistant service manager said that it was probably the steering lock and that they have approximately two a month!

When the electronic steering lock fails, there is a code stored in the electronic ignition switch. But if the systems starts to operate, the code is no longer present. You might want to get it fixed before it leaves stranded and you will have to spend extra on towing.
