Tire size

Can i use tire sizes other than the original size on my C class?
original is a staggered set up with 225/45/r17 front and 245/40/r17 rear.
Could i use 225/45/17 front and rear?
how about 205/55r16 all around?
please advise as I need to buy winter tires and there is huge difference in price.
Thank you

You might find the 16" rims will foul your calipers and not turn, they come out with 17" for a reason to clear components, would not be a problem going to 18" wheel / tyre combo.

I went from staggered to 'square' ... 225/45/17 front and rear. My goal was to be able to rotate the tires so rears don't wear out sooner than the fronts. Key variables on W204 tire size change are front tire diameter of 25.1 inches or less to safely clear the lower spring perch, and then the wheel widths and offsets. Ideally, you want to stay close to the factory ratio of tread width to wheel width to preserve original steering response and balance. So for example, let's say your rear OEM was 245 tires on 8.5" wheels ... if you go to 225 on those same wheels, your tread will be narrower relative to the wheel and this will alter the way the car responds in steering and cornering. Depending on how you drive and your handling preferences this may be nothing at all, or you may not like it.

In my case, I have 7.5" wheels all around with the 225 tires and I think that's a fairly compatible combination for my driving style.

I have the factory w204 staggered wheel set up and run 225s on all 4 corners for my winter tires. A little more stretched on the rear but within spec
