Correct installation of turn indicator below steering wheel

Hi,
Had to take the entire steering column off to pull out the ESL (Electric Steering Lock) due to the failure of the German motor (13 years after, 130,000km), which I replaced with a Chinese US$4 motor, etc. Below the wheel is the air bag and below that is the unit with the two levers (cruise control, turn indicator). For some stupid reason I did turn the item with the two rectangles the wheel fits into and now I find I have to flick the turn lever back manually as it does not return automatically once the turn is finished. I may even have broken something. As the wheel is not horizontal any more when I am driving straight ahead, I will have to take it off anyway and have a chance to reset the position (?) of the unit which flicks the lever back to straight-ahead. Any idea what I must do?
