Known m276 rattle..
2013 c300 4matic.
So it's been over three months now since I have a rattle noise inside my m276 (90K miles) engine on a cold start or 5 min of sitting and now it finally gave me a check engine light (P0346). I did know about this common issue in 2012-2015 3.5l engines, and was planning a diy on changing the chain tensioners and installing oil drain valves when it gets warmer but I didn't know the problem will go on to camshaft adjuster.
Chain tensioner and oil drain valves on FCP are 450$ set, plus 900$ camshaft adjuster... I could change tensioner and install the valves my self but the camshaft adjuster is too tricky and requires a different set of tools. Called different shops in MA they are all 2000$+ to fix this issue. Now Im thinking of just swapping my engine which sounds crazy to me but it only costs around 2000$. Since I did research on this topic, believe me, swapping engine sounds easier than changing camshafts lol.
The trick Im using right now to stop the morning rattle is to add a little bit of oil before I start the car. I guess it lubricates the camshaft adjuster and tensioners and rattle becomes less of embarrassing.
Anyways, if anyone faced this problem, I would greatly appreciate your advice. And for the owners of m276 2012-2015 year, if you hear rattle on cold starts, change your tensioners and add oil valves right away to save more money in the future. Thank you.
