Engine mount replacement

Hi all. I just received a quote from my auto mechanic that the engine mount replacement (2013 C 300 sport all-wheel-drive with 63,000 miles). It Will cost me about nearly $2000. And I’ve been looking around and if it only cost me 300 for parts but the labor might take a bit longer because the driver side is a bit complicated. Is there anyone who actually done this under three hours. And I know it requires a lot of patience but I don’t want to spend $2000.

Hi there,

I just had my engine mounts and transmission mount replaced on my 2010 C350 4MATIC with 153,000KM (mounts were all factory original). Make sure you replace the transmission mount at the same time as well.

I purchased the Corteco brand from FCP Euro as they are OE equipment and come with a lifetime warranty for $397CDN (that’s including shipping/duty fees and the 16MM offset wrench).

I have done most of the work myself on this car but I didn’t feel like wasting a weekend installing them only to be stuck or needing extra parts so I decided to farm the work out to someone else. The 3 hours we’ve seen most people quoting for time is almost always for RWD W204s, not the 4MATIC models.

An Indy shop quoted me 8 hours @$118/hour. One of my buddies said he could do it around the same time (8 hours) for $80/hour but hasn’t ever done the mounts on a W204 so was a little wary. He pointed me to another Indy shop that specialized in European makes/models.

This shop was able to get it done in 3 hours at $150/hour, he had it done in an afternoon. Just to confirm, he didn’t do it the backyard mechanic way by jacking up the engine from the oil pan.

As for the transmission mount, I was able to install that in about an hour myself.

The only difference I see is that I have the M272 engine while you have the M276 so maybe the install in that much more involved with the M276?

how can you tell the difference between the engine. Is there a certain thing that I have to check on the car itself or is it something. Well I I know that the transmission mount is much easier. Which I might be doing this weekend. But if I do that with the engine mount be affected if I don’t replace the entire set at the same time

You car is a 2013 so it will have the M276 engine.

As for the mounts, have a shop install the engine mounts then install the transmission mount yourself afterwards.

Okay thank you. But majority of the vibration is coming from the middle of the car so I’m wondering is it just my transmission mount? And I’m also thinking I should just install the transmission mounts first because that’s also what I have with me the other engine mount that I purchased was for a rwd so I have to return that and get German all wheel drive mount

Check the engine mounts first. If they need replaced, get them done first then do the transmission mount. If you do this in reverse, what happens if you can no longer get the engine mounts done in a timely manner? You’ll just be putting stress and wearing out the transmission mount for no reason.

How to check engine mounts:
  • Your helper gets into the car and starts it up.
  • They place their left foot on the brakes and the right foot on the gas.
  • Place the car in drive and rev the engine up to 2000 rpm for a couple of seconds.
  • Place the car in reverse and rev the engine up to 2000 rpm again.

If the engine bounces around like the video below, your engine mounts are shot.

The M276 mounts - especially on 4Matic cars - are apparently much more difficult than mounts used to be. The prices sound right from what we hear over on the W212 forum with those M276s
