The textured circle

On the dashboard near the steering wheel but quite low down is a circle inset into the plastic, it's slightly recessed and rough textured within the circle. What's it for?

I have a feeling it does nothing at all but I'm curious.

Any suggestions?

I never paid attention to that. My best guess is it's the the driver side temperature sensor for climate control. Passenger side does not have sensor; the computer takes the difference between two settings and adjusts the passenger side temperature.

Yes, and there is a fan behind it. Keep it clean.

is that a that a wind up?

It does have dust stuck in it but I think the fan thing is a **** take. No mention of it in the handbook.
