Clunk/Bang from calipers

2013 W204 4matic Sport
I've been having this issue to varying degrees when I hit uneven pavement an awful clunking comes from either side of the car. It's going on 2 years+. I noticed yesterday it wasn't as severe when I could time the application of the brakes when I knew I'd be able to duplicate the noise. I've been under it DOZENS of times. All the bushings and balljoints are ok. No play in the tie rods or swaybar end links. Struts and all mounting hardware are around 1yr old and in excellent condition. I'm as certain as I can possibly be it isn't the suspension components. I have it on the lift right now and noticed there is a lot of play if you hit the caliper. (See link video, Idk if it will work, I'm sometimes ignorant to file sharing tech) the pictures show a gap between the ears of the pads and the studs on the brackets. This is all new. Rotors, pads, calipers, brackets, bolts, pins, boots, retainer clips and hoses. It did the same on the old setup too. I've tried 4 different pads including MB pads and it was all the same. Torque specs were followed according to WIS guidelines. Am I missing something obvious? Is there some trick? I can't live like this.

I'm experiencing a similar situation, very noticeable over uneven surfaces, sounds like warped rotors at low speed. I'm concerned looking at the video, doesn't seem safe.

Do you have the FL with the 3.5L?

FL just means facelift. I have a theory, these FL models with the m276 engine (3.5L) have quite a lot of different parts than the pre-FL c300's. Some are just slight variants and some are entirely different assemblies. I've been sold the wrong parts a few times due to this non interchangeability. And it seems when this happens the same part for the C350's turned out to be the correct part. If you look closely at the inboard side of the caliper, where the piston is, at the outer edge of the rotor, it seems to sit a little too high on the bracket. You can see the rim of the piston cup and maybe 2mm of gap you can actually see into the cup. Idk yet what the C350's part looks like compared to the C300's but I'm going to try to find out.

They are the same part numbers so that theory is shot. It seems as if the spring retainers would need to be stiffer, or not springs at all but a fastenable bracket to keep the caliper steadied in the bracket/carrier. I might try tapping the holes that the slide pins thread into to make them deeper and use a longer shoulder bolt/pin to give it more grab. But I don't think that's where the issue lies.

Your hold-down spring is not on correctly, you must've had quite a workout getting it like that. It should be on the outside of the caliper bracket not inside.

As a matter of fact, I did hahaha! The way I currently have it installed was how it was when I bought it and of course I just assumed that was the proper fitment. It's going back in the air tomorrow and I will report back.

Well, well, well now! That did it. It took about 90% of the noise away. I still have a much more subdued clunk and that is definitely down to the slide pins having a tiny bit of slop in the metal spacer. I have a new OE set coming from FCP they're the one-time use aluminum encapsulated ones hopefully that will quell the issue once and for all.

Nice catch ltwargssf!
