Horrendous rattle on warm start
Hi,
I'm new to this forum. I have a 2011 C350 Petrol - 306bhp with 57500 miles, it has developed this horrendous rattling/knocking noise on startup, below are the steps to reproduce:
Engine up to temperature
Turn off - leave for at least 30-45 minutes
Start engine
This does not happen with the engine cold or if it has been off for a short period of time. No engine management or other warnings on the dashboard.
I've been able to capture an instance of this happening on video (attached), any idea what it could be? I am hoping it is not timing chain related because from what I've read online that could get expensive.
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated because I am reluctant to drive the car while it is making this noise.

Have not heard that one. It sounds like the engine run good for 1,2 seconds, then something goes wrong, it looses revs and may sound it misfires not sure, then it idles/run correct again. I think you must open the bonnet and check the obvious turning things, or maybe you can feel it around timing chain area.

Just an update on this one, it turned out to be the exhaust camshaft adjuster on the passenger side, apparently quite a common issue with these engines. It had also stretched the secondary chain on that side so that was also replaced.
I also had the check valve and secondary tensioners installed as per service bulletin LI05.10-P-056435.
If anyone encounters this issue and needs someone who can accurately diagnose fix it I used Terry Gates in Harrow.
