Help With Steering Column Installation - ESL Repair

I have removed the faulty ESL and replaced with an emulator. I am putting the car back together and from what I have read and experienced is there is some difficulty in putting the keyed end of the steering column back into the U joint near the pedals. I understand there is one way to put it in by lining up the grooves. For those of you who have done this procedure what is the best way you found to reconnect the two parts?

If you look at the end of the steering column, there should be a little yellow paint at the end of it. Line this up with the paint on the grooves and it should go in. Do not try to force it in, it should just slide in. It took me a good 30 minutes to get it aligned properly.

Thank you. I ended up removing the lower part of the column from the dust cover behind the pedals then marked it with a sharpie myself. You were right it just slid in once I got it lined up correctly.
