2010 C300 4-matic Differential grinding

2010 C300 4-matic Differential grinding
My son said the car was making a metallic grinding noise on accleration so had him take it to a transmission shop. He's away in college and no dealers and local euro shops say they don't work on drivetrain issues but recommend a place in Georgia. That shop said the front differential needs to be replaced but that they come as one unit - transmission nd differential. Cost would be $7500.
I did some research and saw that on some models there are parts available for a differential rebuild of the gears. Has anyone done this for a W204? Did that resolve the issue?
The car has 150K miles and on one hand doesn't seem like throwing almost 8K into it makes sense. But he was rear ended last year (no structural damage) but between recent front end and rear end body work the car looks brand new and interior is in great condition.
