M271 EVO Startup Rattle

My 2013 C250 just started producing the notorious timing chain rattle. I currently don't have a check engine light.

Does anyone have an idea of when I could be expecting a light to appear on the dash? I am intending on taking it to the dealer for a warranty repair, but I am certain that they'll require a CEL before performing the service.

Yes. They will require a check engine light and one of the specific codes before you get extended warranty coverage.

It takes around 2 weeks of 2 starts per day before the CEL comes on. Probably less if the car is started many times a day. To set the CEL, the ECU needs to see the cam timing error 3 times in a row uninterrupted. Note that it will turn the CEL off again if it sees normal cam timing 3 times in a row, so the CEL may be intermittent at first.

You have a 2013. The extended warranty is 10 years from the original sale date of the car. Others have found Mercedes to be inflexible on the warranty expiration date. If your car was originally sold before March 2013, you may want to go to an independent shop or prepare to do it yourself.

Just dropping back in to give some closure to my issue. It took about 500-700 miles after the initial symptoms appeared, before the check engine light came on (P0340 bank 1). The repair notes mentioned that they "...removed timing chain tensioner, both cam adjusters, installed new adjusters, removed pin from timing chain, connected new and old chains together, installed timing chain holder." I'm aware that the extent to which parts are replaced are completely dependent on the dealership you have the car serviced at, so I feel very fortunate that a thorough job was performed under warranty.
