What The Hell Is This? Suspension Breakdown
I had some knocking on my rear shocks so wanted to replace them. Bought some Bilstein B6s…should be an easy job.
Lift up the car to see this - see pics.
Can someone tell me what the hell happened and what part that is I need to replace?
Furthermore, how can a part so
integral to the car be so weak that it completely breaks??

Calling the dealer now to make sure this is still under warranty and will get replaced. That is WILD.
it's not a recall, it's a warranty extension so they can get out of the legal and incredible cost issues of fixing every single car they made for a decade. the older Mercedes had coated subframe components I reckon cuz the W210 and wahtever C class from that era are still kickin. You'll probably be taken care of by the dealer. That subframe thing is gonna be a windfall victory but it might sink the brand
Yeah i didn't look too hard but that looks like the rear subframe your rear control arms attach to. the rubber thing is the subframe bushing

I went ahead and made the appointment early next week. They have to “inspect it first” and then “send it in for approval.” It better get approved.
This is for my mom, so she’ll need a car to get around. Any tips/hacks that you all know where I can convince the dealer to provide a free loaner/rental for her?
Thanks all - great answers here almost immediately.

I'm not going to make excuses for MB but compared to Toyota airbag recall where the airbag turned into a frag grenade, at least you got to use the car for a decade or so.

My neighbor had an older Mercedes (not sure of the year or model) that he brought back from Germany where the shock tower rusted out and the front end collapsed one day. I don't think there has been any manufacturer that hasn't had significant problems: Ford Pinto, Chevy Vega, Mazda rotary engines, and Kia/Hyundai everything. The whole "apply brake when starting the car" (and being in Park for automatic transmissions) requirement came out of problems with the Audi 5000 starting when in gear and killing a couple of people when the car would lurch forward and crush someone standing in front of it.

GM has those ignition lock modules be defective for like 20 years and they knew about it and considered the issue not worth it. Toyota installed those airbags that turned into shrapnel, same with the loose seatbelts that wouldn't save you, and almost no Mazda from the 2000's has functioning airbags.
The lawyers will clean them out for this. It's important that we keep these threads alive and searchable so MB is accountable.
