What The Hell Is This? Suspension Breakdown

Hey -

I had some knocking on my rear shocks so wanted to replace them. Bought some Bilstein B6s…should be an easy job.

Lift up the car to see this - see pics.

Can someone tell me what the hell happened and what part that is I need to replace?

Furthermore, how can a part so

integral to the car be so weak that it completely breaks??

its one of the worst things Mercedes has done in the time I've been involved with the brand

it's not a recall, it's a warranty extension so they can get out of the legal and incredible cost issues of fixing every single car they made for a decade. the older Mercedes had coated subframe components I reckon cuz the W210 and wahtever C class from that era are still kickin. You'll probably be taken care of by the dealer. That subframe thing is gonna be a windfall victory but it might sink the brand

Yeah i didn't look too hard but that looks like the rear subframe your rear control arms attach to. the rubber thing is the subframe bushing

Ive had Mercedes vehicles for almost 20 years (myself, mom, dad) … we’re originally from Germany too. This is a horrendous display of German craftsmanship. It truly is unbelievable.

I went ahead and made the appointment early next week. They have to “inspect it first” and then “send it in for approval.” It better get approved.

This is for my mom, so she’ll need a car to get around. Any tips/hacks that you all know where I can convince the dealer to provide a free loaner/rental for her?

Thanks all - great answers here almost immediately.

Courtesy cars are reserved for customers who have an extended recall/service wait time. I'm sure you're within that bracket given the severity of whats going on I'm sure they can lose a few miles and days on a ****ty A220 to keep you happy.

I'm not going to make excuses for MB but compared to Toyota airbag recall where the airbag turned into a frag grenade, at least you got to use the car for a decade or so.

You should have gotten a letter from MB extending the warranty if you are the registered owner. It's always good to keep your contact info up to date with any major item like a car. Still, automobile manufacturers are supposed to query the MVAs of the various states to find the vehicles and current registered owners for recalls; not sure about extended warranties.

My neighbor had an older Mercedes (not sure of the year or model) that he brought back from Germany where the shock tower rusted out and the front end collapsed one day. I don't think there has been any manufacturer that hasn't had significant problems: Ford Pinto, Chevy Vega, Mazda rotary engines, and Kia/Hyundai everything. The whole "apply brake when starting the car" (and being in Park for automatic transmissions) requirement came out of problems with the Audi 5000 starting when in gear and killing a couple of people when the car would lurch forward and crush someone standing in front of it.

By the way, try searching for "Rotted rear subframe."

Just lost my beautiful W204 Estate to rotted rear subframe as pictured above. Zero help or advice from Dealer. My advice, if you have a W204 Mercedes is get rid of it. How could this happen. Response from Mercedes VERY disappointing. I'm finished with them

I'm sorry to hear. In the United States car manufacturers are liable to any car they make unsafe. Unreliable is one thing, but the time is ticking until the first fatality from this issue. Mercedes can either decide to get behind doing the right thing, or try to recover from under it. This happened with SBC braking systems hence the 25 year warranty on these.

GM has those ignition lock modules be defective for like 20 years and they knew about it and considered the issue not worth it. Toyota installed those airbags that turned into shrapnel, same with the loose seatbelts that wouldn't save you, and almost no Mazda from the 2000's has functioning airbags.

The lawyers will clean them out for this. It's important that we keep these threads alive and searchable so MB is accountable.

You do understand that Mercedes has issued an extended warranty in the US (and I think UK)? In the US, the warranty has been extended to 20 years and unlimited miles, regardless of ownership. Registered vehicle owners should have gotten the letter, dated February 10, 2023.

This is very interesting. I've tried contacting local Dealer where I bought my car. They hide behind their own email system, so no record. They just passed me down the line, past their body shop, who called it a suspension cradle to avoid subframe issues. They recommended a non MB mechanic who just ignored me. Contacted MB head office Australia - acknowledged email, then nothing.
Has anybody attempted this repair?
