Lost Key - Dealer states Replace SRS module and Steering Lock

we purchased this car used from a lot. According to Carfax, nothing was wrong with the car. We lost the only key that came with the car. We towed the car to the dealer not the used car dealership. The Mercedes-Benz rep ordered the key and blades the new key fits. But now they’re stating that the car will not start nor will it move they say it’s because of a steering lock in order to rectify the issue they state they need to order the part for Mercedes Benz directly in headquarters. so we went from replacing one key for $800 to now having to replace the steering lock component which is another $1800. We paid almost 7000 for this car. We are not even sure if it’s worth investing another 2400 into the car at this point the car does not move at all if we were to sell it for parts we probably get a maximum of $1000, we’re trying to figure out if there’s a way to fix this problem if we can order the parts ourselves does anyone have any advice? thank you.

Looks like there is a decent amount of work to replace that steering lock. I never did it and dont kow much about it. I have seen they sell just the replacement electric motor if that is in fact the issue, or it could be soemthing else wrong with the assembly.

Heres a DIY article:

Heres a thread on replacing the motor:

No matter what it should be fixed. Unless you sell the vehicle as-is for a loss. If it were me I would have it towed back to my house and I would try to do the work.

I wish people would list their location when posting!

First, $800 to replace the key is absurd (or are we talking Canadian dollars?). I added a key for my 2004 SL500 because I misplaced the second set. (One should never have only one set of keys and should make getting a second set the first thing they do!). It was about $400 for the replacement key including all necessary programming.

Why did they say you needed a new ESL? They can register a new key using the dealer scan tool. They may have to erase all the others, but apparently they are already lost. If the ESL is broken, I think there is a campaign to replace them free, but need to check on that.

Heres a diagram, its for my 2010 W204 but part #s may be the same. have to double check. When I look it appears the listings claim it cannot be ordered online, only through a dealer. And they are $350-400. Im not sure a used would work, may have to get it coded to the car.

Found some interesting info. I guess they sell remanufactured ones. Has a core charge along with it. Says it will need to be coded and lists a few devices that may be able to do it.
