Grinding noise on start-up, not the starter lol

Hey everybody. When I need Benz advice I can trust this is where I come. I have two issues that I'm looking to get fixed...

So we'll start with the big one... The grinding noise upon start-up (especially after car has sat for a few hours). I'll keep it short and sweet. I thought it was the starter motor. So I took it to a mechanic to get it fixed. I told them what I thought it was, and from what I can tell they just went with what I said and didn't diagnose it themselves, otherwise they would have (should have) realized that it's NOT the starter. So anyway, $1000 for nothing right there....

So I get the car back, get home, and I start researching what it could really be. Everything I have read has steered me (no pun intended) toward it being the "camshaft adjuster". I put these in quotes not because I'm completely oblivious as to what that means, but to imply that I'm slightly aware of what that means. Now I don't know how hard of a job this is to repair. I'm still waiting to hear back from my mechanic on the price. I've already had so much repaired on this car that I'm not looking to throw the white flag in at this point. I have a naïve gut feeling that after this repair I will finally see some mileage without experiencing further issues. So, I come to you all. Is it the cam adjusters? What is a resonable repair price for something like this? Could it be something else? You're advice is greatly appreciated.

And the second issue, this one is insignificant in comparison. My driver side window is shot. It's all the way down and won't roll up. The passenger side went about 4 months ago and it cost me $400 to repair (OEM parts). This time though, they are trying to hit me for $750 for the driver side. I'm reluctant to this number. They are saying the driver side assembly costs a lot more than the passenger side, around $490... Ugh! My question is, will an aftermarket assembly be just fine? It will save me around $350 dollars.

The one I'm looking at:
Amazon Amazon

Thank you in advance, for all of your wise words.

No idea about the grinding issue, ill have to research more.

As for the window what exactly is the issue, is the motor blown? or could be the switch? I'm a fan of buying used Mercedes parts on ebay, i've had good luck so far. I havent worked on any of my doors yet but i think the door cards are riveted in, I could be wrong.

So on the grinding issue I have a possible idea on what it could be as I had an odd grinding I thought might be coming from the engine itself but turns out my power steering fluid/ hydraulic fluid was low and it was the pump making the noise. Check your power steering fluid level if you haven't lately. Could be completely different from my issue but worth a check.

Lesson learned: If you tell the mechanic to do something, they will do what you tell them to do. Describe the problem, not the solution.

I was doing some research and it appears the camshaft adjuster noise does make sense, more so the cam sprocket,.

I dont see how a noise from the cam shaft can be mistaken for the starter though.

Have someone start the car while you are leaning over the engine listening for where the noise is coming from, if you hadn't already?
