Chain tensioner completely loose, a story of luck. Om651 2010 C200
So this is a weird one, i feel very lucky about the timing. I have been having some intermittent rattle at startup, maybe once a week. Decided to change just the tensioner, as it is a cheap part and an easy job. Stealership quoted me nearly 4000$ on changing the chain so that has to wait.
Anyways, I get the new tensioner and get cracking with removing the old one. As I start to unravel the location I notice some oil around the tensioner. Then I notice the tensioner is completely loose, I could unscrew it with my fingers! That is crazy, and surely it would soon become even looser and start spewing oil onto the exhaust.
Just had to share this one, such luck that I decided to do this job now. New tensioner is in place, correctly tightened, and all is good. New part came with four oilflow holes as opposed to two on the one that was in there. I guess that is good(?)
