Strange Exhaust and Gearbox Sound (W204)

Last night I noticed a new sound coming from my exhaust, it's not too loud, but it's a bit of a tinny/metallic rattle/scraping sound. My initial thought was that it was a loose heat shield or exhaust clamp, but then I noticed that when I shifted from park into reverse, there was a thunk. The car still drives the same, there is no power loss, and the transmission seems to be acting normally when driving, both at low and high speeds. Any idea what this could be? I cant hear anything except static in my head phones.

Could be a loose clamp or bracket. I replaced two clamps that were completely rusted through. I also had two clips for the undertray that were missing but those were making a banging sound that I originally thought was something wrong with the front suspension. . Have to get under there and have a look around. The clamps you can see just looking underneath without having to get under.

Sorry for the noise, I'll send through another video, maybe some sound loss due to compression sending it to my PC. As far as checking for the clamps, where should I look under the car?

I can hear the noise your talking about. I'm hardly an expert on exhausts though to me it sounds like there may be a leak in it somewhere. i think you may have the same exaust i do.

I had two clamps that were cracked. Luckily I got away with leaving the old sealing ring in and used some muffler weld to seal it up. Im not sure if it was even leaking, i was just trying to add some material back on for the clamp to press against. I replaced clamps #150 and #430.

Heres the thread I made about it. https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w...ling-ring.html

Thank you, Tim, I appreciate you taking the time to send me all that and respond. I'll check it out later and let you know what it is once I have it properly diagnosed.

You're never going to believe this... I took my exhaust tips off and found that a few sharp pebbles had lodged themselves in between the two metal plates of the tips. They were scraping on them and causing the sound.

So, what about the thunk when shifting to Reverse?
