I think 88K is low, my 2010 has a little over 150K now. Things break and wear especially being a new England car. I buy used parts from California salvage yards on eBay and theres such a difference in condition. I just want to keep it in good safe running condition for as long as I can so i am always inspecting things and replace as they become worn or broken. Only big issues ive had is a check engine light for the purge valve, I had a front spring break while the car was parked. I did replace both rear dust shields they were so rusted and the E brake springs wouldnt hold. When I was replacing the rear rotors I ended up pulling the E brake pads out along with it so that was a mess. Things like sway bar links need changing, I just noticed the rear tie rods look beat so should replace them. Seems there is always something to do, i have a new transmission pan im going to replace the rusted pan with when i do the fluid and filter change. The oil filter housing gaskets were leaking oil so i replaced those, did a coolant replacement at the same time so thats off the list. if I had to bring it somewhere it would probably be expensive.

I made a thread of things ive done so far and how i save alot of money doing the work myself and buying used parts. I updated the struts, rear springs and shocks with used for the price of 1 new strut and it rides great now.

https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w...uspension.html

I dont think im doing anything i wouldn't be doing if it were another car with the same year and mileage.

If you do remove the air pump check valves make sure to buy new gaskets for them, they are less than $2 each at the MB dealer.

It sounds like being a DIY person is very helpful when owning an older Mercedes. My brother in law does the oil changes for me but other than that, I'm basically on my own. I do like the car but I have a feeling I'm not going to like it so much when I have put all kinds of work into it. TimC, I'm going to check out your post and see what I can expect at 100K+ miles. Jetta, the dealership lets you provide the parts for the tranny service? Seems like that would save a lot as they markup the parts. For now, I am waiting for the pump and relay to arrive. It's funny Tim you said Cali junkyards b/c that's where I ordered my used pump from.

One thing I just noticed is when I take the front engine cover off, some of the foam directly above the secondary pump has melted/burned away. Nothing crazy but enough to notice that there must have been something going on under there.
I will update this thread when I get the new pump in, as it may be helpful to someone else.

Oh yea, someone is selling.an iCarsoft For Mercedes Benz Sprinter i980 Professional Diagnostic OBD Scanner for under $60 on ebay, its used but do you think that is a good scanner that will be able to clear the code after the repair? thanks

My dealership does, at least for me. I've always have been friendly with the service manager and not acted like an ***. I figured that I saved about $100-$150 providing my own parts. Remember, the Service Manager is selling services, and the Parts Manager is selling parts.

The iCarsoft i980 will probably be able to clear the codes, or at least it claims to. As far as getting a used one off eBay, well, as always, make sure you are buy from a seller with a good reputation.

I might just buy the scanner off ebay that you recommended for $160. Do you have the one? I read that the icarsoft needs to be updated and might not work on my W204 C300 4 matic sport. Tim, which scanner do you have? You have the same car as me so I might get the same one you have.

Ive been looking at vavles on ebay and the dealer that I bought the pump off is selling the left and right valves off the same car that the pump came off, they are $45 each. I know I will need gaskets as well. I'm hoping the pump fixes it and I dont need vavles but we'll see. Those look a littler more tricky to replace than the pump. Fingers crossed

I have the Foxwell NT530. But I havent really used it or needed to use it since I got it. Its not touch screen like the one above which does look nice. They probably do the same things except mines doesnt have internet connection.

if it is just a burned out pump your valve are probably fine hopefully. They are only 3 bolts to take off. I bought the gaskets because i planned on removing and cleaning them for fun just havent gotten around to it.

I like Labur Parts on ebay because they list the mileage of the car the part is from. And they have very good looking parts which amazes me.

The only reason I want a scanner is to clear the code. There is 1 guy that specializes in Mercedes that cleared the ignition coil code for me, might have to ask him unless it falls off right away. This Monday holiday is killing the shipping times, hopefully the pump is here by Friday. I was checking out the valve replacement, it looks doable but maybe harder than the pump. LaburParts is the ebay vendor I used, when I checked the VIN on the pump a bought it said the car had 198k miles LOL the pump looked super clean, I'm guessing it was replaced at some point, otherwise it lasted 200K. I prob should have checked the VIN before I bought the pump but like you said Cali driving isn't New England driving.

I wonder if autozone or advanced auto will clear codes for you? I know they can read codes, ive never had it done there before though.

I ordered OEM HELLA 0025428719 relay on ebay as an exact replacement for the relay I had but I don't see a lot of the for sale, do you know if Mercedes changed their relays at any point? DO you have the HELLA 0025428719 relays on your C300 w204 Tim? I remember reading about a recall on relays, I guess they were burning out the pump. I just want to make sure I am using the correct relay. As far as the scanner, I am seriously considering ordering the Launch x431 for $160. I am tempted to remove my Secondary air pump and open it up while I wait for my replacement to see why it failed. You havent had to replace yours yet and you have 150k? Did you buy your C300 new?

I havent replaced the pump and it appears to look original but who knows. All my relays say Hella on them in the front sam.

They still sell those relays online. The MB dealer does say currently unavailable though which is odd.

Just installed the the pump, put a new fuse in and everything seems to be running fine. I heard the fan turn on for 40 seconds and then shut off. The CEL is still on, I think I need to drive it around. I did hear the pump turn on for like 10 secs after it shut off, I think it computer was checking itself to see if its working correctly. Anyways, I'm going to get gas, as its just below 1/4 tank and I read to complete the drive cycle you need to have between 1/4 and 3/4 full gas. Oh yea, while I was in there, checked the hoses and check valves. Both looked good, the valves were pretty damn clean for a 15 year old car. As for the old pump, that thing is toast. I told it apart and noticed some corrosion on the metal fans, no water tho. I took some photos. Someone had already replace that pump according to the sticker on the old one it was in late 2015. When I disassembled the old pump, there was a TON of carbon dust in there, I used my compressor to blow it out. While I had the engine covers off I also used the compressor to blow out the 2 air filters, lots of dust. So the new pump came with a bracket on it and I thought it was the wrong b/c it was slightly different and longer so I put the old one on. Turns of the original one that was on there was incorrect as the 4th bottom most screw was not attached to anything. I just went with it as there was 3 very secure bolts holding it in, if there is a problem later I will change it out. I will post photos.

old pump has date on it 09-10-15

lots of carbon

Does anyone know the 2 sizes of the T30 torx screws that hold the bracket to the engine? I might have stripped one of the shorter ones (over tightened abit) and would like to have a replacement incase I have to take it out. Thanks

I never worked on the pump so have no personal knowledge of whats in there. Just what the diagrams say. Looks like there is a 14mm holding the engine cover bracket on, $1.90 at MB dealer. They are measured without the head.

Torque spec is 14nm for the brackets, 8nm for attaching the pump to the bracket.

Thank you, 14mm sounds correct. Im probably doing to just order a set of T30 M6 torx bolts that covers a number of sizes. If you ever need to change yours, there are 2 different brackets that will work. The one for my car has a bolt to the right of the topmost bolt (its a couples inches below the top bolt to the right. The one that was on my car did not have that, it was a shorter bracket. The lowest, bottom left bolt I found out screws into nothing at all, weird. Thanks for the info, car is running great, now I need to get the code reset. Tried driving it around on the highway but the CEL is still on.

Mine has the shorter bracket. No bolt above the thermostat. One bolt on the left below where the engine cover bracket mounts. Looks like I can install the larger bracket since there is a hole in the engine where it should go.

UPDATE: After installed the secondary air pump, the car has been running great, much quieter on cold starts. Drove over 50 miles and CEL would not come off so I went to a local mechanic that specializes in Mercedes. He cleared the code and said all my systems were OK, thus the issue was fixed. Now I just need to drive enough to get all the I/M readiness systems back to OK and will go in for my sticker. For anyone debating if they can fix their air pump, you can. It was very easy and I saved a ton of money, I did the job for under $100. Now I am looking for new front tires. My buddy had some OEM original rear wheels off a 2011 C300. I am wondering if those will fix on the front, giving me a square set up instead of staggered. The front on my car (2010 C300 4matic Sport) is stock 17x7.5 with 225/45r17 tires and rear are 18x8.5 with 245/40r17. Does anyone know if those rear tires will have enough clearance on the front? The rims are 1 inch wider, and the tires are 20mm wider, I think it will look awesome but not sure if they will fit. If they won't fit, I wonder if spacers and longer lug bolts would work on the front? I don't know much about spacers, any had experience with hem? thanks!

Tim, that's the exact bracket I have. That bottom bolt all the way down did not connect to anything when I put the screw in, does yours? I don't know why they used the wrong bracket on our cars as it appears. You can definitely use the longer bracket like the 1 I posted above. My setup only has 1 bolt to the engine and 2 of the other bracket.

Both of my cars are RWD with staggered wheels. I didn't know you could put staggered wheels on an AWD car. All the AWD cars I've had used the same size all around.

EDIT: A search shows lots of posts on this topic. So, search away!

Not sure I would call it the wrong bracket. In the diagram there are 2 part numbers, one is the updated #. When I look up the current part# 2721413540 im finding the shorter brackets. Take a look at the bracket and see if it is stamped 2721413540. I would say the shorter bracket is the "updated" version.

As far as the bottom left bolt, mine appears to be in and secure. Which bolt did you try and use in that hole, the longer bolt?

For the rims the front has a 47mm offset and the rear is 58mm. Guessing you would need some type of spacer or you may be rubbing the strut. Im speculating since I dont really know much about rims and sizing. If I were to switch I would keep them all the front size since W204s come that way from the factory.
