10W40 Engine Oil for M271 Evo Engine

My car has reached 200k KM mileage. Is there anyone out there using 10W 40 engine oil for their engine? If so, is there any effects?

10W-40 is not an approved grade for your engine. That doesn't mean you can't use it, but I would stick to what is approved. Look for MB 229.5, 229.51 or 229.52 approvals. Also, you should look for API SP rated oil.

Hey @VitoCorleone10,

Jetta Red is correct, that isn't an approved oil. But, I am running LiquiMoly MOLYGEN 5w-40. I switched from Mobil1 0w-40.

New Generation MOLYGEN meets the MB 229.5 spec but isn't on the approved oil list. I have not had any issues and it actually lowered my overall engine noise.

I highly recommend the LiquiMoly MOLYGEN 5w-40.

wow, learn something new everyday. Never heard of an oil offset before.

I've always done the "6.9 quarts" both my C400 manuals call for, always puts me close to the max line.

I did not personally use anything except oils approved on sheet 229.5 in my U.S. C250 with the M271 EVO engine. Some components of the 271.9xx are lubrication critical, notably the timing chain and camshaft adjusters. 229.5 oils all have zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) levels very near 1000 ppm. 229.51 & 229.52 oils are low ash and have lower ZDDP levels of ~800 ppm. The only 10W-40 oils with MB approval are on sheets 229.1 & 229.3. There is a Mobil 1 10W-40 High Mileage oil available with 1000 ppm ZDDP that is not on any MB approval sheet.

Assuming your country MY (Malaysia) in your profile is correct, you probably have consistently warm weather, so the 10W viscosity should not be an issue. If you can find the sufficient ZDDP level in a 10W-40 oil locally, it probably would not hurt to use it. Possibly Petronas, who teams with Mercedes in F1 racing, would have something.

Racing oils all have even higher levels of ZDDP, however, more than 1000 ppm can harm catalytic converters. Racing oils also have much higher viscosity, e.g. 15W-50 or 10W-60, making them generally unsuitable for road car use.

I hope this shines some light on a complex issue.
